The State Transportation Commission (STC) has given its approval to the final version of the Michigan Department of Transportation’s (MDOT) 2026-2030 Five-Year Transportation Program (5YTP). The document will be submitted to the Michigan Legislature, state budget director, and both House and Senate fiscal agencies by March 1, as required by state law.
MDOT made the draft program available for public and stakeholder feedback from August 1 to September 1, 2025. The finalized plan is now accessible at Michigan.gov/MDOT5YearProgram.
The five-year program outlines planned projects within the MDOT Trunkline Highway program, which covers state-maintained roads, bridges, and facilities. It also includes information on Public Transportation, Rail, and Aeronautics initiatives. According to MDOT, this document links long-term goals with project planning and performance monitoring while establishing a foundation for future trunkline projects under the State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP).
Key aspects of this year’s plan include $16.1 billion in anticipated investments funded by both state and federal sources. Of that amount:
- $10.7 billion is designated for Highway Program projects focusing mainly on repairs and reconstruction of MDOT roads and bridges. This figure incorporates over $31.5 million from Governor Gretchen Whitmer's $3.5 billion Rebuilding Michigan initiative.
- $5.4 billion will support Multimodal Programs: $4.5 billion allocated for public transportation—including bus services, marine transport, railroads, and ports—and $900 million dedicated to aeronautics.
Additionally, the plan provides a county-by-county list of trunkline highway construction projects scheduled for funding during the next five years along with a summary of input gathered during the public comment period.
For those needing assistance accessing or interpreting the 5YTP—such as individuals requiring alternative formats—support is available through MDOT's ADA coordinator at Michigan.gov/MDOT-ADA.
