Construction crews are preparing to shift westbound I-696 traffic from I-75 to M-10 onto the eastbound lanes in Oakland County, as the reconstruction of eastbound I-696 nears completion. This change will allow for rebuilding of the westbound lanes and will affect access to several entrance and exit ramps.
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) announced that starting at 8 p.m. on Friday, November 14, until 10 a.m. Sunday, November 16, entrance ramps to westbound I-696 at Couzens Avenue, Bermuda/Hilton Road, M-1 (Woodward Avenue), Coolidge Highway, Greenfield Road, Southfield Road, and Evergreen Road will be closed. Drivers can reenter westbound I-696 at M-10 (Lodge Freeway)/Lahser Road.
From 4 a.m. Saturday, November 15, through 10 a.m. Sunday, November 16, both northbound and southbound I-75 ramps (Exit 61) to westbound I-696 will also be closed. In addition, westbound I-696 itself will be closed between I-75 and Lahser Road during this period. MDOT recommends a detour using southbound I-75, westbound M-8 (Davison Freeway), and northbound M-10 (Lodge Freeway) back to westbound I-696.
After these closures end at 10 a.m. on Sunday, November 16—and continuing through late 2026—westbound I-696 from I-75 to Lahser Road will have three open lanes. Only select entrance and exit ramps will remain accessible: those at I-75, M-1 (Woodward Avenue), Southfield Road, US-24 (Telegraph Road), M-10 (Lodge Freeway), and Lahser Road.
Other ramps along this stretch—including Couzens Avenue, Bermuda/Hilton Road, Coolidge Highway, Greenfield Road, and Evergreen Road—will stay closed until late 2026 for ongoing construction work.
The ramp closures are part of the final phase of the Restore the Reuther project aimed at completing the rebuilding of I-696 by 2026. Additional major roadwork is scheduled for 2027 between I-75 and Dequindre Road; this includes further roadway reconstruction as well as bridge repairs and drainage improvements.
As part of the broader effort on this corridor in Oakland County, work is being done on approximately 60 bridges. Among them is the Church Street Plaza bridge containing Victoria Park; its reconstruction continues with a pedestrian walkway detour currently in place.
