March marks National Credit Education Month, and Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is urging residents to take advantage of free weekly credit reports available from the three major credit reporting agencies: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.
"National Credit Education Month is a perfect time to educate yourself on the importance of understanding and checking your credit score," Nessel stated. "Taking the time to review your free weekly credit report can help you stay vigilant against scammers and build a strong financial foundation for the future."
Credit reports are crucial as they contain financial and personal data used by businesses and potential creditors to evaluate an individual's financial fitness for rentals, financing for houses or vehicles, insurance, or employment. Inaccurate information could affect application approvals, making it essential for residents to be informed about their credit reports and scores.
Residents can access their free weekly credit report through Annual Credit Report's website, the only official site authorized by federal law. While other sites may offer free credit reports, caution is advised due to spoofed or fraudulent sites designed to steal money or personal information.
