Northern Michigan University (NMU) athletics teams had a busy week from March 11 to March 16, participating in various national championships and tournaments.
On Tuesday, March 11, the women's alpine ski team competed in the USCSA Nationals' giant slalom event. Tommie Springer and Ainsley Kirk earned Second Team All-American honors by finishing sixth and eleventh, respectively. The team ranked 22nd out of 27. In swimming, Kalina Ceglinski qualified for the NCAA Tournament at the women's swim and dive qualification meet. For the men's team, Tobie Stiles and Benaiah Schnurstein also secured spots in the NCAA Tournament.
The following day, Wednesday, March 12, Kyan Hopke led NMU's men's alpine ski team to a third-place finish out of 26 teams in the USCSA Nationals' giant slalom by placing fifth individually as a First Team All-American. Aaron Grzelak finished eleventh with Second Team All-American recognition. At the NCAA Championship for women's swim and dive, Anika Wright placed thirteenth in the 1000 freestyle while Ceglinski took twelfth in the 1-meter dive; both were named Second Team All-Americans. The relay team of Camilla Carbone, Zoe DeKievit, Mia Strazny, and Becca Burrows finished fifteenth in the 200 medley relay.
In men's swimming on Wednesday, Leo Nolles won a bronze medal in the 50 freestyle with a third-place finish as a First Team All-American. Ian Rocheleau joined Wyatt Dickman, William LaCount, and Nolles to secure an eleventh-place finish in the 200 medley relay.
Thursday's events saw more success for NMU athletes. Tobie Stiles achieved sixteenth place in the men's NCAA Championship's 3-meter dive while Daniel Lopez Aponte finished eleventh in the 400 IM; both received Second Team All-American honors. In addition to these achievements, Rocheleau teamed up again with Dickman, LaCount, and Nolles for a thirteenth-place finish in the 400 medley relay.
In women's alpine skiing at USCSA Nationals on Thursday, Reagan Olli captured a bronze medal with her third-place finish as a First Team All-American while Ainsley Kirk placed ninth. The team ranked second out of twenty-seven competitors.
Friday brought further accomplishments as NMU continued competing at various championships. In men's swimming at NCAA Championships that day: Wyatt Dickman came twelfth overall within his category -100 breaststroke- earning him another spot among other talented individuals who made it onto this year's list comprising those receiving accolades such as being named "Second-Team" all-Americans; meanwhile others like William LaCount joined forces alongside Gabriel Fulconi & Daniel Khmara forming what would ultimately become known collectively now simply referred hereafter justifiably so too given their remarkable achievement: "the silver-medal-winning quartet" responsible bringing home second place honors courtesy primarily due largely thanks not only themselves but also teammate Leo Nolles contributing significantly towards overall success enjoyed during said competition specifically involving participation relating directly back around involvement concerning completion regarding aforementioned specific segment i.e., “200-freestyle-relay.”
On Friday evening’s basketball game against Hillsdale College (ranked number six), NMU women’s basketball managed an impressive comeback victory despite trailing initially early stages throughout opening quarter eventually prevailing final scoreline reading sixty-one points versus fifty-six favoring Wildcats led notably standout performances contributed primarily key players Mackenzie Holzwart scoring thirteen crucial points including several important free throws coupled alongside efforts Alyssa Hill achieving double-double figures tallying eleven total combined rebounds points respectively advancing next round thirty-two remaining contenders vying championship title aspirations still intact hopefuls yet determined continue progressing further along tournament path journey ahead awaits eagerly anticipated future challenges await them eagerly awaiting upcoming matches scheduled shortly thereafter soon enough!
Saturday saw lacrosse triumph over Lewis University ending decisive fashion twenty-nine margin differential thanks largely outstanding contributions Josie Lakosky whose record-breaking performance included seven goals plus six assists setting new program records most points scored single match thirteen additionally surpassing previous best mark held highest number recorded individual assists single contest six accomplished feat remarkable indeed!
