NFIB Michigan State Director Amanda Fisher has contributed an op-ed to Crain’s Detroit Business, discussing the pressing need for regulatory reform in Michigan's small business sector.
In her piece, Fisher highlights the complexity of the state's regulatory landscape. She notes that beyond licensing and permitting, small businesses must navigate numerous regulations. "It is important to understand that there are many facets to the state’s regulatory environment. In addition to licensing and permitting, there are a myriad of regulations with which small businesses have to comply," she explains.
Fisher emphasizes that small businesses face unique challenges due to limited resources and staff, making it difficult for them to manage government requirements effectively. "Small business owners typically don’t have the resources or staff to dedicate time to dealing with government bureaucracy," she writes. She further warns of the cumulative burden of seemingly minor regulations: "And while some regulations may not seem significant, the proverbial 'death by a thousand paper cuts' is a real issue for small businesses."
Fisher also points out that certain regulations pose more substantial challenges: "And some of those regulations are more significant and are full-on knife wounds."
