The Northern Michigan Wildcats women's volleyball team secured a five-set victory over the Ferris State Bulldogs on Friday at Vandament Arena in Marquette. The Wildcats, now 12-13 overall and 9-4 in GLIAC play, overcame the top-ranked Bulldogs (19-6, 11-3 GLIAC) in a match that extended to five sets for the fifth time this season at home.
"We sure love to make it interesting at home!" said NMU Assistant Coach Lauren Van Remortel. "The girls' composure and grit down the stretch was so impressive against an incredible opponent. You cannot ask for much more as a coach."
Sydney Bartels delivered a career-best performance with 21 kills, 15 digs, two blocks, and an ace. Head Coach Mike Lozier commented on her effort: "[Bartels] is amazing," added Head Coach Mike Lozier. "I'm really proud of her for never giving up and to get rewarded for it with that performance is pretty cool."
Other key contributors included McKenzie Gruner with 15 kills and seven blocks, Madison York with 14 kills, Allie Barlow recording 50 assists and 15 digs, and libero Liesl Haugen leading the team with 24 digs.
The match saw both teams trading runs throughout each set. After dropping the second set to Ferris State, Northern Michigan responded by winning a close third set before Ferris State forced a decisive fifth set. In the final frame, NMU took an early lead but had to withstand a late surge from Ferris State before clinching the win.
Looking ahead, Northern Michigan will continue its homestand by hosting Davenport Panthers on Saturday at Vandament Arena. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
"Another tough match tomorrow with the Panthers," said Van Remortel, "but I know that this team is ready for the challenge. Go 'Cats!"
