Rangers sweep Wildcats; NMU returns home for four-game stretch

The Northern Michigan Wildcats women's volleyball team lost to the Parkside Rangers in three sets on Saturday in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The final scores were 16-25, 25-27, and 16-25.

Northern Michigan had a hitting percentage of .186 for the match, while Parkside posted a .357 hitting percentage, which was the second-highest allowed by Northern Michigan this season. Parkside also led in service aces with eight compared to Northern's three and outblocked the Wildcats seven to three.

McKenzie Gruner led Northern Michigan with 12 kills. Ava Irvin from Parkside had a match-high 15 kills.

With this loss, Northern Michigan's record stands at 11-13 overall and 8-4 in GLIAC play. The Wildcats are one of seven teams within two games of each other in the conference standings. Parkside has now won six consecutive matches and improved their record to 16-6 overall and 7-5 in conference play.

In the first set, Parkside took early leads of 9-3 and 13-5. Kills from Sydney Bartels and Gruner helped close the gap to four points at 18-15, but Parkside responded with five straight points and finished the set at 25-16. Northern Michigan hit .129 in the opening frame compared to Parkside’s .419.

The second set was closely contested. After a back-and-forth start, Parkside went on a five-point run to lead 10-6. Northern Michigan tied it at 13 midway through the set and later held a brief lead at 17-15 before Parkside regained control with four consecutive points. NMU rallied from down 23-20 to reach set point but ultimately lost the set in extra points, 27-25. The Wildcats recorded 17 kills on a .227 hitting percentage while Parkside hit .333.

Northern Michigan started strong in the third set with a 7-5 lead before Parkside responded with seven straight points for a quick turnaround at 14-9. The Rangers extended their advantage through the end of the match, scoring six of the last seven points to win the final set, 25-16.

The Wildcats will return home for a four-game homestand to finish out the regular season, starting against Ferris State on Friday, November 7 at 4 p.m.
