The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will move forward with the next stage of its $7.6 million project to rebuild M-71 (Washington Street) in Owosso, according to an announcement from the agency.

Beginning Friday, October 24, construction crews will start work on the M-71 (Water Street) section between M-21 and Washington Street. As part of this phase, the Jerome Avenue/Washington Street/Water Street intersection will reopen to allow eastbound traffic to continue through to Washington Street and Jerome Avenue. Work will then shift to the north side of M-71 (Water Street), requiring closure and detour of westbound lanes. Eastbound traffic will remain unaffected by detours.

Westbound drivers will be rerouted via Washington Street and M-21. The intersections at Ball Street and Comstock Street along M-71 (Water Street) are set to close during milling and paving activities.

The current phase includes a range of improvements: "This phase includes milling, asphalt work and roadway rebuilding, including water main, storm sewer, sanitary sewer, curb and gutter, sidewalk, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant ramps, signal modernization and pavement markings. The M-71 bridge over the Shiawassee River will also be improved. Overall work is expected to be complete at the end of November," according to MDOT.
