More than 200 organizations, including the Michigan Chamber of Commerce, have signed a joint letter to Congress expressing opposition to proposed legislation that would restrict the use of arbitration agreements and class action waivers in various legal contexts.
The organizations argue that several bills currently under consideration in Congress could significantly alter the arbitration system. The proposed reforms target arbitration and class action waiver provisions in areas such as employment disputes, consumer contracts, data privacy, discrimination claims, and antitrust cases. If enacted, these bills could invalidate millions of existing agreements and limit the ways individuals and businesses resolve disputes.
According to the joint letter, these legislative changes would primarily benefit class action lawyers rather than the individuals the bills aim to protect. The organizations maintain that arbitration provides an effective means for resolving disputes outside of court.
The Michigan Chamber encourages those seeking more information to read the joint letter or contact Wendy Block for further details.
