The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has announced a significant infrastructure project in Iosco County, involving the replacement of the M-55 bridge over the east branch of the Au Gres River. The $4.6 million investment aims to improve safety and accessibility in the area.
Construction is scheduled to begin on March 3, 2025, with an estimated completion date of September 26, 2025. During this period, M-55 will be closed to all through traffic at the bridge location. Non-commercial vehicles will be redirected via North Imperial Drive, Carpenter Road, and North Greenwood Road. Commercial traffic will follow detours on South Sand Lake Road, Whittemore Road, and M-65. Access for local residents and businesses will remain open on both sides of the bridge.
The new bridge design includes modern safety features such as upgraded barriers and guardrails. It will also have a wider span of 44 feet with 10-foot-wide paved shoulders to enhance safety and comfort for all users.
According to economic modeling by MDOT, this project is expected to support 44 jobs directly and indirectly. This development underscores MDOT's commitment to improving transportation infrastructure while fostering job creation in the region.
