This past weekend, a significant event unfolded at the Superior Dome, marking a memorable moment for Coach Matt Majkrzak and many others involved. The coach shared his experiences and gratitude in a letter detailing the highlights of the occasion.
Majkrzak expressed his admiration for the atmosphere, stating, "The Dome is my favorite building in the world. It's where Lindsey and I got engaged, and now this event makes it all the more special." He described witnessing 11,500 people coming together as an incredible sight.
Reflecting on the leadership qualities observed during the preparation and execution of the event, Majkrzak noted, "I learned more about leadership through this experience than any book or degree could ever teach."
Acknowledging various contributors to the event's success, he praised Coach Izzo's group for their excellence and humility. He also commended Kevin Pauga and Michigan State's administration for their role in organizing such events.
Producer Steve Scheer and analysts Lisa Byington and Bill Raftery were recognized for their professional expertise. Majkrzak highlighted numerous individuals who impressed him with their leadership skills.
In discussing Northern Michigan University's involvement, he stated, "We proved we belonged," emphasizing that both Marquette and Northern Michigan showcased their ability to compete on an elite stage.
Majkrzak expressed gratitude towards President Tessman, Gavin Leach, Jeff Korpi, and other members of Northern's administration for supporting such a large-scale event. He credited Rick Comley for his mentorship and Robin Burke for her extensive efforts in organizing the showdown.
The coach extended thanks to Brandon Sager, Mike Bath, Christy Lake, and others who contributed significantly behind the scenes. His appreciation also extended to his team of players and staff who represented NMU with pride.
He concluded by expressing personal joy from family moments experienced during the event. Notably, his father attended despite having suffered a stroke last year. "Getting to have those moments with my dad is one of the highlights of my life," Majkrzak shared.
Finally, he thanked Coach Izzo for making these memories possible: "You're the reason for all of this."
