NMU athletics recap: Volleyball triumphs; football struggles; jersey retirement

Northern Michigan University (NMU) athletics had a busy weekend with several teams competing in various sports. The volleyball team had a successful run, starting with a 3-2 victory over Michigan Tech on Wednesday. Jacqueline Smith achieved career highs with 28 kills and 19 digs, while Meghan Meyer and Caylie Barlage reached significant career milestones of 1,000 kills and digs, respectively. Allie Barlow set a personal best with 62 assists.

On Friday, the women's soccer team secured a decisive 5-0 win against Parkside. Brooke Pietila and Molly Pistorius each contributed one goal and two assists. Maria Storm, Calihan Bearden, and Ashley Koch also scored for NMU, marking their ninth clean sheet of the season.

The men's soccer team faced Purdue Northwest but lost 0-3 despite outshooting them 13-8. In volleyball, NMU won against Purdue Northwest with Kaysie Bakke achieving a career-high of 12 kills. Jacqueline Smith added another strong performance with 14 kills and 17 digs.

The hockey team played against Michigan Tech but suffered a 0-3 loss. Ryan Ouellette made an impressive effort with 38 saves.

Saturday saw the football team face no. 2 Ferris State, resulting in a heavy defeat of 9-55. Jake Bilitz connected with Michael Love for a notable 78-yard passing touchdown.

Volleyball continued its winning streak by defeating Parkside again in a close match ending at 3-2. Jacqueline Smith recorded another standout performance with 20 kills.

In wrestling, four athletes placed in the top five at the Luther Hill Invitational: Kailyn Garrett (2nd place), Alissa Caltagirone (4th place), Sophia Bassino (4th place), and Clarissa Wangen (5th place).

The hockey rematch against Michigan Tech ended in another loss for NMU at 3-6 despite leading after the first period thanks to Grayden Slipec's three points.

Sunday concluded with men's soccer securing a narrow victory over Parkside thanks to Jaziel Sainz de Vilmorin's last-minute goal assisted by Teun Van Gansewinkel.

Women's basketball saw Lisa (Jamula) Maki's #40 jersey retired before their exhibition match against UW Stevens Point as her daughter now plays for the Pointers.
