Northville Township issued the following announcement on Apr 3.
Books are transformative. In honor of National Library Week, Northville Township Manager and Public Safety Director Todd Mutchler recalls the exact moment his love for reading took hold and when he found his current favorite that he returns to multiple times a year.
He was a high school sophomore and his grandmother took him to the bookstore at Woodland Mall in Grand Rapids to purchase a literature class’ required classic, John Steinbeck’s “The Grapes of Wrath.”
“She shared her excitement for reading with me,” Manager Mutchler said. And it stuck. He is an ardent reader, whether books or online newsletters.
He shared that love of reading with his children, one of whom became a literature teacher and often funnels his latest reads his way.
His favorite book, though, was assigned reading from the FBI National Academy, a 10-week leadership course he attended in 2014.
“The Practice of Adaptive Leadership” by Ronald Heifetz, Alexander Grashow and Marty Linsky challenged his long-held beliefs and ignited his curiosity. He found himself continually questioning why leaders in an organization make the choices they do. That, in turn, formed him into the leader that he is today because he constantly examines policies and practices, ensuring they work effectively or are ripe for change to discover a better approach.
Highlighted and filled with sticky notes, Manager Mutchler stores “Adaptive Leadership” on a shelf 4 feet from his desk at Township Hall. He pulls it out regularly and uses it to craft lessons for the students he teaches at Eastern Michigan University’s School of Police Staff and Command.
He’s helping transform the next generation of leaders one good book at a time.
