A candidate for the Michigan state legislature is drawing opposition close to home -- literally.
His own daughters are urging people not to vote for him.
This is Robert Regan’s third bid for the state House; he is hoping to represent the 73rd District, which is northern Kent County. The Republican from Grand Rapids believes that the Black Lives Matter movement is destructive and that “antifa exists an organization,” WoodTV reported.
“For the love of God, do not vote for my dad for state rep.,” Stephanie Regan recently tweeted, according to WoodTV. “Tell everyone.”
In an interview with the station, Robert Regan said he was hurt by the comments. “I’m the father, I’m human, you can feel things like that,” he said.
But he said he taught his four children to “always focus on the truth.” He is grateful his daughters feel that they may speak out without their opinions interfering with their family's relationship, according to WoodTV.
Regan is known to be among a group who were burning their absentee ballot applications at a recent demonstration. He favors making English the official language in Michigan and opposes easing immigration restrictions.
“I’m really excited that they had a solid enough relationship with me that they could completely dis me on social media and know that I’m not going to disown them,” Regan told WoodTV.
Regan believes his daughters acquired their liberal beliefs in college. “Quite frankly, they get involved with these Marxist, socialist universities and they start getting indoctrinated with things that are completely the polar opposite from where you raised them,” the candidate said.
