This week, the Michigan House passed a set of bills with bipartisan support aimed at advancing small modular reactor (SMR) technology in the state. SMRs are a new type of nuclear energy system that is designed to be safer, smaller, and more efficient for both new and existing power facilities.
The proposed legislation would establish guidelines for the development and implementation of SMR technology in Michigan. Bill sponsors believe this move will help position Michigan as a leader in clean and reliable next-generation energy production.
The Michigan Chamber of Commerce has expressed its support for the legislative package as it heads to the Michigan Senate. "The Michigan Chamber has long championed the need for durable, long-term energy planning and regulatory certainty. We support this package as it moves to the Michigan Senate — because access to clean, affordable and reliable energy is essential to Michigan businesses and communities," according to a statement from the organization.
