On a recent program, Michael Rogers interviewed Jim Byrum, the owner of Byrum Ace Hardware. The hardware store chain has grown to eight locations in mid-Michigan since its inception over 42 years ago in Leslie. Byrum identified a demand for local hardware stores with more convenient hours and focused on personalized customer service to distinguish his business from larger competitors. "The big box stores certainly have a place and they do well, but we pride ourselves on service," Byrum said. "When somebody walks in the door, we want to make sure that we meet their demand. We ask them what we can do to help them. We provide that assistance. And frankly, that's the niche we have."
