The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) has announced the allocation of over $1.8 million in Rural Development Fund Grants to support infrastructure and promote the sustainability of land-based industries in rural areas. A total of 21 projects have been selected for funding, aiming to benefit various sectors including food safety, renewable energy, and access to safe drinking water.
MDARD Director Tim Boring emphasized the importance of supporting key industries: "MDARD is committed to supporting the food, agriculture and forest products industries vital to Michigan's economy."
Among the recipients, K.I. Sawyer Water Wastewater Department in Gwinn received $100,000 to maintain the aeration building at its wastewater treatment plant. Similarly, Ely Township in Ishpeming was granted $100,000 to tackle drinking water quality issues through new infrastructure.
The grants also include $100,000 for Northern Michigan University to establish a rooftop solar project, which is expected to offer renewable energy solutions and lower utility costs. The City of Negaunee is set to use its $100,000 to replace a sewer main and address infrastructure challenges.
Support for community projects is evident as well, with the Superior Hills Association of Parents and Educators receiving $100,000 for playground renovations under the "You Can in Michigan" campaign. Efforts to boost local businesses and job creation are reflected in funding received by TCA Management, LLC and Pahl Enterprises, LLC, each awarded $100,000 to expand operations and enhance facilities.
Projects were chosen to promote sustainable practices and enhance the local economy. Other notable allocations include $91,744 to Gypsy Distillery for a new bottling line and $65,448 to Lakeshore Depot L3C for a local food distribution initiative.
Applications for future grants can be submitted via the MiAgGrants system, prioritizing projects within counties with populations under 70,000. The program, guided by Public Act 411 of 2012, intends to boost workforce training and business development.
