The State of Michigan has approved a new energy code that mandates compliance for all commercial construction projects starting April 22, 2025. The new regulations require adherence to ASHRAE 90.1-2019 with specific lighting amendments or the IECC 2021 with Michigan amendments. The significant change in this code is the introduction of Functional Performance Testing (FPT), which involves evaluating building envelope, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, as well as energy monitoring systems, at both the design and construction phases.
The new code also mandates enhanced energy monitoring for all new buildings, with requirements to monitor electricity, natural gas, steam, and other energy sources. Additionally, it introduces outlet control via occupancy sensors for various commercial uses, improvements in insulation and MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing) equipment requirements, expanded controls requirements, and the necessity of Energy Recovery Ventilators (ERVs) in dwelling units.
E3M, involved in the code review process with the State of Michigan, offers expert services for developing and executing Functional Performance Testing plans. The organization provides a detailed guide answering common questions about the new code, available for download in PDF format.
