The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is set to commence a substantial reconstruction project on M-14/I-96 in Livonia and Plymouth Township, Wayne County. The $140 million initiative will span two years, beginning with the eastbound lanes from Sheldon Road to Newburgh Road starting Friday, February 28. Completion for this section is anticipated by late 2025.
The project will involve lane reductions during the rebuilding process. Eastbound M-14/I-96 will maintain one operational lane from before Beck Road to Levan Road, with all entrance and exit ramps closed between Sheldon and Newburgh roads.
Short-term ramp closures include the Sheldon Road exit ramp, which will be inaccessible for about one month. Additionally, I-275 ramps leading to eastbound I-96 will close for roughly two months. Other ramps are expected to remain closed through the end of 2025. Westbound traffic will retain two open lanes, though the northbound I-275 ramp to westbound M-14 will be shut down for the entire year.
In 2026, attention will shift to rebuilding westbound lanes while keeping two lanes open in each direction amid various ramp closures.
MDOT has planned traffic management strategies considering approximately 125,000 daily drivers near the I-275 interchange. During this period, Metro Trail's reconstruction is also scheduled for the 2026 season.
The investment in this infrastructure project is projected to support approximately 1,336 jobs through direct and indirect means according to economic modeling.
