As Valentine's Day approaches, the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) is urging pet owners to prioritize their animals' safety and well-being during the celebrations. State Veterinarian Nora Wineland emphasized the importance of reducing stress and discomfort for pets, stating, "One of the best ways to show our pets some love this holiday is to make sure they don't have any additional stress or discomfort."
MDARD has provided a list of five tips for keeping animals safe during the holiday. The first tip advises against feeding pets chocolate or candies containing xylitol, as these can be toxic. Instead, owners should stick to regular pet treats.
The second tip involves keeping holiday decorations such as gift wrap, ribbons, and balloons out of reach. These items can pose a risk if ingested by pets. Additionally, candles should not be left unattended around curious animals.
When it comes to floral arrangements, MDARD recommends choosing pet-friendly options. Flowers like roses with thorns and certain varieties such as lilies and tulips can be harmful if consumed by pets.
To maintain animal health, MDARD advises setting boundaries to prevent contact with wildlife or other unknown animals. Ensuring vaccinations are up-to-date is also crucial in protecting against diseases like rabies and distemper.
Lastly, MDARD encourages donations to the Animal Welfare Fund through state tax returns. Contributions support Michigan's 212 registered animal shelters in caring for local animals awaiting adoption.
These guidelines aim to help keep pets safe throughout Valentine's Day celebrations. Pet owners are encouraged to consult their veterinarians if they have any concerns about their animals' health.
