Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has initiated an investigation into Ryan Thompson, owner of Fallen Timbers in Morenci. The inquiry focuses on allegations that Thompson falsified veterinary records for at least three dogs sold to Michigan consumers.

In November 2024, a consumer reported purchasing a four-month-old boxer puppy from Fallen Timbers for $1,500 after discovering the business through its Facebook page. The sales contract included a health guarantee claiming the puppy was "immunized," "wormed," and in "good health." However, when the consumer picked up the puppy, it appeared unwell. A subsequent veterinary examination revealed the puppy had a respiratory infection and tested positive for coccidiosis, giardia, and cryptosporidiosis. Hillcrest Veterinary Clinic stated they never examined the puppy.

Another consumer experienced similar issues after adopting an English bulldog puppy from Thompson in 2022 for $3,000. Despite receiving a "health guarantee" and veterinary records supposedly from Fieldstone Veterinary Care, the puppy had a congenital defect. Allegations suggest that Thompson falsified records from Fieldstone Veterinary Care on at least one other occasion.

"Puppy scams are becoming more common and sophisticated, putting both Michigan animal lovers and animal welfare at risk," Nessel stated. She advised potential adopters to research breeders thoroughly and avoid purchasing puppies without seeing them in person. Nessel emphasized her office's commitment to pursuing individuals who deceive consumers seeking pets.

Last month, Attorney General Nessel concluded an investigation into another alleged fraudulent pet adoption scheme. Her office is reissuing a consumer alert on puppy scams to help Michiganders avoid online dog-purchasing frauds. Consumers suspecting they received falsified paperwork when buying pets from Thompson or his business are encouraged to contact the Department’s Consumer Protection Team.
