The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and Michigan State Police (MSP) are reminding families in the state about the availability of free gun locks. This reminder coincides with the one-year anniversary of Michigan's secure storage law, which was enacted on February 13, 2024. Since then, over 56,800 free gun locks have been distributed.
Public Act 17 of 2023 mandates that firearms must be stored unloaded and locked if a minor is likely to be present. The MSP allocated $500,000 from its FY24 budget to purchase cable-style gun locks from Project ChildSafe. These locks have been available for free at MDHHS county offices and some local health departments since last summer.
Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist II emphasized the importance of safety: “Everyone in Michigan deserves to feel safe, whether they’re at home, work, school, or out in the community.” He praised efforts to provide free gun locks as part of broader initiatives to reduce gun violence.
Elizabeth Hertel, MDHHS director, highlighted the significance of safe firearm storage: “Free gun locks are still available at our local offices... Safe firearm storage saves lives.” She urged residents to utilize this resource while supplies last.
Firearm injuries became the leading cause of death for children in the U.S. in 2020. In Michigan alone, approximately 1,500 residents die annually due to firearm injuries. Col. James F. Grady II from MSP stated: “Gun owners play an important role... The solution is simple – obtain and use a gun lock.”
Michigan’s secure storage law aims to protect families from gun violence and accidental injuries by promoting awareness about safe storage practices and providing resources like free gun locks.
Residents can obtain a free cable gun lock by visiting a local MDHHS office or checking with their local health department.
