Northern Michigan University's men's basketball player, Max Weisbrod, has been recognized as the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Player of the Year. This accolade follows his previous honor as GLIAC Freshman of the Year. The announcement was made by the conference on Friday.
Weisbrod is only the fourth player from Northern Michigan to receive this award and the first since Cory Brathol in 2000. He played a pivotal role in leading the Wildcats to a 21-9 regular season record and a 14-4 conference mark, securing their first regular season title since 1992-93.
The sophomore from DeForest, Wisconsin, finished fifth in scoring within the conference with an average of 17.1 points per game. He also ranked second in assists per game at 4.4 and three-pointers per game at 2.8, while placing fourth in total free throws with an accuracy of 80.8%. In conference games, he averaged 19.1 points per game, with an impressive performance over the last 11 games where he averaged 21.8 points.
Throughout the season, Weisbrod demonstrated consistent performance by recording double figures in 22 games and exceeding 20 points in ten of those games. Notably, he scored over 30 points twice, including a career-high of 35 points against Michigan Tech.
Weisbrod's ability to perform under pressure was evident during close matches. He achieved a shooting percentage of 77.8% when the Wildcats were either leading by one possession or attempting a comeback with less than two minutes remaining. His standout moment came with a buzzer-beating three-pointer against Lake Superior State.
Over two seasons, Weisbrod has accumulated significant stats: playing in 61 games with totals of 882 points (averaging 14.5 per game), 289 assists (averaging 4.7 per game), and achieving a three-point shooting percentage of 41.7%.
Additionally, Northern Michigan's coach Matt Majkrzak was named GLIAC Coach of the Year and Dylan Kuehl received First Team honors along with All-Defensive accolades.
