The NMU women's golf team demonstrated strong performance in the first round of the Lewis Flyer Spring Invite, securing a lead by nine strokes after 18 holes. The team posted an opening round score of +32 (320), placing them ahead of Quincy and Illinois Springfield, who scored 329 and 332, respectively.
Among the standout performers were Maya Hunter, Alyssa Yaggie, and Maggie Pietila, all ranking within the top ten individuals. Notably, only one other school managed to have two athletes in this group.
Maya Hunter experienced contrasting halves during her round. She began with a +4 on the front nine but improved significantly with two birdies on the back nine to finish at +3 for the day, securing second place. Her birdies were achieved on par-four holes: the 388-yard 10th and 330-yard 15th.
Alyssa Yaggie completed her round with a score of 78 (+6), including four birdies. She matched Hunter's front nine score of +1 (37) but recorded a +5 (41) on the back nine. Yaggie's strengths showed particularly on par-three holes where she made birdies at the 200-yard third and 163-yard seventeenth holes.
Maggie Pietila finished her round at 81 (+9), achieving consistent scores across both nines to sit tied for seventh. Pietila recorded birdies on challenging holes: the lengthy par-five second hole and the par-three thirteenth.
Payton Donnelly contributed with a score of +14 (86), tying for twenty-second place individually. Hailey Bolander followed closely behind with a score of +15 (87), tying for twenty-fifth place. Competing as an individual, Payton Dube ended with a score of +19 (91), sitting tied for thirty-sixth.
