In the competitive business environment, securing a distinct position is vital for small businesses. Certifications such as Small Business Certification, Women Business Enterprise (WBE) Certification, and Service Disabled and Veteran Owned Business (SD/VOB) Certification are instrumental in enhancing a business's credibility and attracting potential partners.

The Small Business Association of Michigan (SBAM) offers certification for Michigan-based small businesses with fewer than 500 employees and annual gross revenues not exceeding $25 million. This certification distinguishes businesses from competitors and provides opportunities for growth. Companies like Enbridge, Consumers Energy, and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan seek partnerships with certified small Michigan providers.

To apply for this certification, businesses must submit an application with a $100 fee—waived for SBAM Elite members—along with specific documentation. Approved applicants receive a certificate and logo for marketing purposes.

The WBE certification is recognized nationwide by various corporations and government agencies. To qualify, a business must be at least 51% owned and controlled by women who are U.S. citizens or legal residents. SBAM collaborates with the Great Lakes Women’s Business Council to offer discounts on WBE certification for its members.

Certified WBEs gain access to resources from the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC), including business listings viewed by corporate members, training programs, and invitations to the annual WBENC conference.

The SD/VOB certification through the National Veteran Business Development Council (NVBDC) is acknowledged across industries, facilitating access to contracts with state and federal agencies. SBAM offers its members discounted rates on this certification.

These certifications not only elevate a company's profile but also open doors to professional development and networking opportunities. For more information, interested parties can contact Sherry Bryan at sherry.bryan@sbam.org or visit the SBAM website.
