The Northern Michigan women's wrestling team secured a 12th place finish out of 29 teams at the Adrian Invite held on Sunday in Adrian, Michigan. The Wildcats' standout performer was freshman Sophia Bassino, who clinched third place in the 160 weight class and earned 23.0 team points. Bassino (10-3) began her run with a victory by fall over Janiya Brogan from West Liberty University and proceeded to defeat Jacqueline Sandquist of Gannon quickly.
Continuing her strong performance, Bassino won by technical fall against Paige Jackson from Lock Haven University but faced a setback in the semifinals against Destiny Rodriguez. She rebounded with a win over Lizzie Raleigh of North Central College and concluded her tournament with a victory over Tiera Jimerson, also from North Central College.
In another notable performance, Alissa Caltagirone (9-4) finished sixth in the 145 weight class, contributing 11.0 points to the team's total. Caltagirone advanced past Tayla Tildsley of Sacred Heart University and Sarina Bertram from North Central College before falling to Eduarda Batista.
Additional contributions came from six other Wildcats, bringing the team's score to 53.5 points overall. Samantha Chaon scored five points at 138, Mickaela Keane added 4.5 points at 180, Zhivanna Magdaleno contributed four points at 124, Prisccilla Hartwell earned three points at 145, Trinity Valentin scored 1.5 points at 110, and Ozioma Ogu also scored 1.5 points at 207.
North Central College dominated the competition with a total of 314.0 points. The Wildcats managed to achieve the tournament's eleventh highest number of pins with eight pins completed in just under fourteen minutes.
Looking ahead, Northern Michigan will participate in the Grand Valley State Duals scheduled for Saturday, November 16.
