EAST LANSING, Mich. — The City of East Lansing is pleased to announce that a new code compliance officer has been hired to investigate and respond to complaints related to rental license violations and administer the vacant property program for the City.

Marcus Hardy began his full-time employment with the City of East Lansing on November 28, 2022. In his role, Hardy responds to concerns from community members about properties that are being rented without a license, including properties that are being used as vacation rentals with popular online services.

Hardy also investigates rentals that are over occupancy. Each rental property is zoned to allow a certain number of tenants for the safety of those tenants and the preservation of the neighborhood in which the property is located. Violations of the occupancy limits are considered civil infractions and can result in a citation and fines.

In his new position, Hardy also administers the City’s vacant property program. East Lansing residents who are planning to be away from their home for any significant period, with no one at the property, should register with the program. The City will monitor the property and advise the property owner if issues arise, such as broken windows, fallen gutters or frozen pipes.

“I moved to this area to study at Michigan State University in 2004 and I am very excited that my career path in housing has led me back to working for the City of East Lansing,” Code Compliance Officer Marcus Hardy said.
