Aric Nesbitt, a Senator from Michigan, has called on Democratic leaders to end the government shutdown and prioritize American military families over benefits for undocumented immigrants. This statement was made on the social media platform X.

"Democrats would rather send military families to the food pantry than give up benefits for illegal immigrants," said Aric Young Nesbitt, State Senator for Michigan. "It's time to put AMERICANS FIRST. DO YOUR JOBS and stop holding our government hostage. The people of Michigan deserve better."

The 2025 U.S. government shutdown commenced on October 1 after Congress failed to pass funding legislation due to disagreements over foreign aid and health subsidy provisions. According to Reuters, the shutdown resulted in the cessation of most federal operations, although essential services such as military and border security continued. House Republicans have advocated for reopening agencies incrementally, while Senate Democrats insist on a comprehensive funding agreement that includes social programs.

According to the National Conference of State Legislatures and the Partnership for Public Service, the shutdown has led to approximately 750,000 to 900,000 federal workers being furloughed, with an additional 700,000 working without pay. Military families and civilian defense personnel are among those affected, experiencing delayed paychecks and increased reliance on food banks and financial aid. The economic impact of the shutdown extends to federal contractors and small businesses located near military bases.

Comprehensive data for 2025 regarding state or federal spending on undocumented immigrants is not currently available. However, existing sources confirm that most federal benefits remain restricted. According to the Congressional Research Service and prior guidance from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), undocumented immigrants are largely ineligible for federal welfare programs but may access emergency Medicaid and public education. State programs vary widely; California and New York allocate state funds for limited health and social services.

Nesbitt is a Republican member of the Michigan Senate, serving as Senate Minority Leader for the 2023–2026 term. He represents the 20th District according to Ballotpedia and the Michigan Legislature. Previously, he served in the House, including a term as House Majority Floor Leader. Nesbitt holds degrees from Hillsdale College and the Norwegian School of Economics, focusing his legislative efforts on energy policy, taxation, and regulatory reform.
