Amazon received $82 million in subsidies, tax breaks, and grants from Michigan communities for five projects.

Advocacy group Good Jobs First, which opposes such subsidies, found Michigan provided the 13th-highest amount of grants and breaks among U.S. states to the nearly $1-trillion company.

Michigan is ranked behind California (12 projects/$85 million) and ahead of Maryland (3 projects/$68 million), South Carolina (5 projects/$64 million), and Indiana (15 projects/$60 million).

The most expensive subsidy provided in Michigan was by the Livonia government, which offered $22 million to Amazon in subsidies, grants, and local property tax abatements.

The second largest subsidy was from the Caledonia government, equaling $17 million in property tax abatements and development grants.

There were no developments which received undisclosed subsidy amounts.

Most of Michigan's investments have benefited large, established car manufacturers.

Though the organization providing billions in tax credits to corporations folded in 2012, the credits still exist and will be paid for by Michigan taxpayers beyond 2030.

As of Nov. 17, 2022, Amazon had received 310 separate tax break deals from local and state governments across the U.S., totaling $5.14 billion. The state of Virginia was home to the largest portion of these taxpayer-subsidized Amazon projects.
