This week, the Office of Equity and Inclusion will be showcasing important historical figures, lesser known facts about slavery in the USA, and contemporary movements for racial justice in the week leading up to Juneteenth.
On June 19th, 1865 in Galveston Texas, troops arrived to free the remaining enslaved Black people there, a full two years after President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. Every year on “Juneteenth, African Americans celebrate the abolition of slavery in the US in a variety of ways. Festivals, gatherings and marches are common. The holiday’s name is a portmanteau of ‘June’ and ‘Nineteenth’.
