The Michigan Department of Attorney General has taken over prosecutorial duties in Luce County following the appointment of former Luce County Prosecutor Thomas Evans as the Lake County Prosecuting Attorney. The transition began after discussions with staff at the Luce County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office and the district court bench, with assistance starting on October 14.

Attorney General Dana Nessel stated, “Protecting public safety and securing justice requires uninterrupted prosecution. I am relieved that the new state budget gives my office the resources needed to step in and support local prosecutor’s offices to maintain critical services when vacancies arise. We are committed to ensuring that the people of Luce County experience no disruption during this transition period.”

The Department of Attorney General has previously provided similar support in other counties facing vacancies, including Houghton, Lake, and Ontonagon counties. State resources have been allocated to sustain these prosecutorial efforts until a new prosecutor is appointed in Luce County.
