Leo Nolles, a member of the Northern Michigan University swim and dive team and the current GLIAC Swimmer of the Year, is representing Uruguay at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships in Singapore.
Nolles has achieved All-American status and earned bronze medals in both the 50 and 100 freestyle events at this year's NCAA Division II Championships. He is competing in those same events at the international competition.
On July 29, Nolles participated in the 100m freestyle heats. He swam in heat seven out of twelve, taking lane six, and finished second in his heat with a time of 50.04 seconds. This was compared to his bronze medal-winning time of 42.71 seconds at the NCAA Championships. The fastest time in the heats came from David Popovici of Romania with a mark of 47.41 seconds. Nolles placed 42nd out of 110 swimmers overall, finishing just over one and a half seconds away from qualifying for the semifinals.
Nolles will also compete in the 50m freestyle on July 31, swimming in heat eight out of thirteen from lane seven. If he advances from this round, he will participate in one of two semifinals scheduled for August 1 (Singapore local time), with finals set for August 2.
"Nolles is no stranger to international competition, as he swam in the 100m freestyle in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, as well as swimming in the World Aquatic Championships the past two years."
