The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) has introduced an interactive map showcasing artisanal dairy products to celebrate National Dairy Month. This initiative aims to highlight the contributions of dairy farmers and processors to Michigan's economy and promote healthy eating habits through increased dairy consumption.
"Dairy is a leading sector of Michigan's agriculture industry and has a significant impact on the state's economy," stated MDARD Director Tim Boring during his visit to Verdant Hollow Farms in Buchanan. He emphasized that National Dairy Month is an opportunity to appreciate the role of dairy farmers in the state's economic landscape.
National Dairy Month, celebrated since 1939, encourages families to choose milk for its nutritional benefits. As part of this year's celebration, MDARD has launched a virtual map featuring 11 Michigan dairy farms and processors specializing in small batch production of cheese, milk, and ice cream. This map aims to assist consumers in locating locally produced specialty dairy products throughout the state.
Michigan's dairy industry is substantial, with nearly 850 family farms and over 444,000 cows producing enough milk for both state supply and national demand. The range of products includes milk, cheese, yogurt, ice cream, among others, ensuring consumers have access to healthy and nutritious options.
The state's dairy businesses utilize various technologies from automated milking systems in large processors to small batch artisanal cheese making on farms. MDARD supports diverse agricultural practices that benefit farms of all sizes, contributing positively to Michigan's economic health.
