Michigan State Director Amanda Fisher of the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) has expressed support for the Red Tape Reduction Initiative led by Representative Bill G. Schuette and House Republicans. NFIB, a prominent small business advocacy group, has been pushing for legislative oversight over state departments that use permitting and licensing to create de facto laws.
Fisher stated, "NFIB’s Main Street Agenda has included restoring legislative oversight and the reining in of the state departments for the past several years. These departments go around the legislature and use permitting and licensing to make de facto laws that should fall under the purview of elected officials."
Governor Whitmer's acknowledgment of challenges with the permitting process was well-received by small businesses. Fisher emphasized that regulatory issues are particularly difficult for small business owners who lack resources to navigate government bureaucracy. She noted appreciation for Chairman Schuette's efforts with the House Rules Committee to identify areas for meaningful change.
"Small businesses were encouraged to hear Governor Whitmer address the challenges with the permitting process. Regulatory issues are especially challenging for small business owners who do not have the resources and time to spend dealing with government bureaucracy. NFIB appreciates Chairman Schuette picking up that mantle and the thoughtful process that he and the House Rules Committee participated in to identify areas where meaningful changes can be made," Fisher continued.
The NFIB is committed to collaborating with lawmakers on this initiative, viewing it as a chance to improve Michigan's regulatory environment by reversing burdensome regulations imposed by unelected officials and eliminating redundancies within state government.
"NFIB looks forward to continuing to partner with lawmakers to implement the Red Tape Reduction Initiative. We believe this is an opportunity to make substantial changes to Michigan’s regulatory environment. Reversing onerous regulations put into place by unelected bureaucrats, as well as eliminating redundancies that exist within state government will make it easier for entrepreneurs to start and grow small businesses in Michigan."
The NFIB has been advocating for America's small businesses since 1943, operating as a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization focused on supporting independent business owners across all states.
