The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has recognized 228 student-athletes from Northern Michigan University (NMU) for their academic achievements during the 2024-25 season. This announcement was made on June 11 and represents an increase in honorees from previous years, with 225 recognized last year and 213 in the 2022-23 period.
Among the NMU Wildcats, 143 athletes were awarded Academic Excellence recognition, while another 85 received All-Academic Team honors. The criteria for these awards require student-athletes to be listed on the active roster at the end of their sport's season and maintain a specific grade point average. For the All-Academic Award, a GPA between 3.0 and 3.49 is required, whereas the Academic Excellence Award necessitates a GPA of 3.5 or higher.
A notable requirement is that freshmen or first-year transfer students are not eligible; however, redshirt freshmen can qualify for these distinctions.
"Cross Country" had a total of fourteen honorees with four on the All-Academic list and ten receiving Academic Excellence status. In "Football," sixteen players were named to the All-Academic Team while thirteen achieved Academic Excellence.
For "Men's Soccer," one athlete earned an All-Academic spot, with seven gaining Academic Excellence accolades. In contrast, "Women's Soccer" saw eight athletes on the All-Academic list and nineteen in Academic Excellence.
The "Volleyball" team had five players on the All-Academic roster and eight achieving Academic Excellence. The Nordic skiing category labeled as At-Large included two on the All-Academic Team and twelve achieving excellence.
Both men's and women's basketball teams saw an equal distribution between their respective categories: men's basketball had four athletes in each category while women's basketball also balanced with four in all-academic and five in excellence recognition.
In swimming and diving, twenty-five men participated with ten earning all-academic honors compared to fifteen excelling academically; similarly structured was women's swimming which featured five all-academics versus twenty excelling members.
The indoor/outdoor track & field team boasted thirteen all-academics alongside fifteen academic excellences while men's golf showed three under all-academics contrasting against two excelling scholars whereas women’s golf celebrated five excellent academics without any representation among all-academics.
Finally within lacrosse there were eighteen honored individuals where ten stood as partakers upon an esteemed collective known as 'All Academics' joined by eight recognized via excellence labels reflective throughout this distinguished acknowledgment process amongst dedicated scholarly athletics encompassing multiple disciplines thriving beyond sporting prowess alone!
