Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, along with a coalition of states, has obtained a preliminary injunction to prevent the termination of AmeriCorps grants by the Trump Administration. The lawsuit was initiated after the federal government notified 24 states, including Michigan, on April 25 about ending its AmeriCorps grant programs.
AmeriCorps is an independent federal agency that engages Americans in community service to address educational, public safety, and environmental needs. Each year, it provides opportunities for over 200,000 Americans to serve their communities. In 2024, the Michigan Community Service Commission received approximately $18 million in grants from AmeriCorps, which supported thousands of volunteers across the state.
"AmeriCorps grants support essential programs, and its members contribute hundreds of thousands of hours each year to improve our parks, tutor students, and help with disaster recovery," said Nessel. "The Trump Administration’s attempt to cancel grants was not only unlawful but would have had a devastating ripple effect across our state. This injunction ensures that these critical services continue in Michigan."
Nessel was joined by attorneys general from Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Hawai‘i, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont Washington Wisconsin Kentucky and Pennsylvania.
