Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, alongside a coalition of 20 attorneys general, has successfully obtained a preliminary injunction to halt the dismantling of the Department of Education. This legal measure aims to prevent the targeted reduction of this federal agency, which plays a crucial role in ensuring quality education and essential resources for millions of students.
"The Department of Education provides essential support for millions of students, families, and educators across Michigan," Nessel stated. "The unconstitutional dismantling of this agency would have stripped critical resources from students with disabilities, children living in poverty, those experiencing homelessness, and Michiganders pursuing higher education. I am proud to have secured this preliminary injunction and will continue to fight to ensure Michigan students have the resources and opportunities they need to succeed."
Michigan benefits from approximately $1.5 billion in federal education funding annually. These funds support various programs such as special education services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, Early On Services for young children, and Title I-V programs that assist migrant and indigenous education initiatives, English language learners, immigrant students, rural low-income districts, and students facing neglect and delinquency.
Joining Attorney General Nessel in this legal effort are her counterparts from Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Hawai‘i, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, and Wisconsin.
