Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network are engaged in multiple initiatives to minimize drug costs for their members. These efforts include a collaboration with Civica Rx that began in 2020, where they joined 17 other Blue plans to offer more affordable versions of generic medications. The first release, abiraterone (Zytiga), is utilized in treating prostate cancer, and other medications are anticipated in 2025.
Additionally, Blue Cross's High-Cost Drug Discount Optimization Program, supported by PillarRx, helps members access manufacturer copayment assistance for over 300 costly medications. The scope of this program includes medications for diabetes, cardiovascular issues, and migraines.
The Drug Adherence Discount Program, in partnership with Sempre Health, offers savings for members keeping up with their prescriptions. Since 2020, members have seen $10 million in savings. Similarly, the Generics Advantage Program (GAP) provides BCN commercial members with pharmacy benefits when they adhere to prescriptions for select generic medications. This program aims to expand to Medicare.
Since June 2023, the Price Edge initiative has saved Blue Cross members $32.3 million and BCN members $22.9 million by identifying the lowest available prices for generic medications.
Evio Pharmacy Solutions, another partnership involving four Blue plans, targets the rising expense of prescription and specialty drugs. It promotes a value-based contracting model. Evio helped launch Synergie Medication Collective, a group aimed at enhancing affordability for drugs administered in clinical settings, benefiting nearly 100 million Americans covered by Blue Cross Blue Shield plans.
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan remains committed to reducing pharmaceutical costs and improving pharmacy benefits, ensuring that medications are both affordable and accessible.
