The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) has allocated more than $3.8 million in grants to support 51 projects across the state. These grants, aimed at assisting underserved businesses, are the result of financial backing from Governor Whitmer's bipartisan budget. The funding will promote value-added agricultural processing and enhance regional food systems through these diverse projects.
"MDARD is proud to make bold investments in Michigan's food and agriculture industries," said MDARD Director Tim Boring. "These investments highlight the diverse and expansive agriculture opportunities that contribute to economic prosperity and strengthened food access across the state. We want everyone to know that Michigan is the best place for the food and agricultural industry to thrive."
These grants will result in the creation of 146 full-time and 203 part-time jobs in Michigan's agricultural sector. The project recipients vary, including initiatives aimed at expanding production facilities, establishing new training centers, and enhancing food access and safety.
Underserved, Value-Added and Regional Food Systems grant allocations stem from state coffers and remain unaffected by federal measures. The application process for the next fiscal year will commence in April.
Several notable projects among the recipients include Ptashka LLC in Oak Park, which will use the funds to purchase an automated packaging line, thereby creating jobs. Another recipient, New City Neighbors in Grand Rapids, will establish a Western Michigan Urban Agricultural Training Center, offering programs for future urban growers.
Other projects receiving funds include the Greater Bridgman Area Chamber and Growth Alliance in Bridgman for building renovations and Scott Meats, Inc. in Muskegon Heights for enhancing production capabilities. Additionally, Social Vines LLC in Dexter will improve winery and vineyard equipment, contributing to job creation and community engagement.
Each of these projects plays a role in supporting local economies and strengthening Michigan's food and agricultural industries.
