President Donald Trump has issued an executive order aiming to override Michigan's voting laws, sparking a response from Common Cause Michigan. The order seeks to give the White House control over the state's elections by introducing measures on ballot counting and voter verification. It also threatens to withhold funding from states that do not comply.
The executive order follows a recent effort by some Michigan legislators with House Joint Resolution B, which aims to limit ballot access for eligible voters in the state.
Quentin Turner, Executive Director of Common Cause Michigan, criticized the move: “A president does not set election law for Michigan and never will. Trump’s executive action is just another transparent attempt to enact baseless voter suppression here in Michigan. Whether it is the block the ballot resolution Michigan Republicans are advancing or this executive order, voter suppression is unwelcome in Michigan, and we will fight it tooth and nail.”
