Yesterday, Tukua Young and Brandon Young from Detroit faced arraignment in the 36th District Court. The charges relate to alleged fraudulent disability insurance claims amounting to nearly $150,000. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced the proceedings.
Tukua Young faces several charges: one count of conducting a criminal enterprise, one count of false pretenses between $20,000 and $50,000, two counts of false pretenses between $1,000 and $20,000, and two counts of insurance-fraudulent acts. Brandon Young is charged with one count of conducting a criminal enterprise, two counts of false pretenses between $20,000 and $50,000, and two counts of insurance-fraudulent acts.
Between 2016 and 2022, Tukua Young allegedly filed three fraudulent claims with an insurance company for a total payout of $55,952.70. In 2019 and 2020, Brandon Young reportedly filed two similar claims with the same insurer receiving $70,434. Both claimed disability from working at a non-existent group home. Additionally in 2022, Tukua Young allegedly filed another claim with a different insurer for $23,105.73 while continuing to work.
Attorney General Nessel stated: “Making fraudulent claims siphons resources away from people who need them and raises insurance costs for everyone else,” adding that her office is committed to accountability in such cases.
The couple's next court appearances are scheduled for March 28 for a Probable Cause Conference followed by a Preliminary Examination on April 7 in the same court.
