The Northern Michigan University (NMU) women's soccer team has announced the appointment of Nathan Phillips as an assistant coach. This decision was made public by head coach Erin Egolf.
Phillips comes to NMU after three years with Millikin University, a Division III institution in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW). During his tenure at Millikin starting in 2022, Phillips contributed to significant improvements in the team's performance. The team recorded results of 5-7-3 in his first year, improved to 7-6-4 in the second year, and achieved a record of 14-4-1 in his third year. This progression earned them the third seed in the CCIW tournament and allowed them to host a playoff game for the first time.
Head coach Egolf expressed her enthusiasm about Phillips joining the Wildcats: "I am extremely excited that Nathan is joining our Wildcat Women's Soccer family! He has a quality soccer background, both as a player and as a coach, and will certainly add a lot of knowledge and personality to our team. Nathan's arrival completes our coaching staff, and I look forward to continuing the advancement of this excellent women's soccer program together!"
Before his role at Millikin, Phillips worked for three seasons as an assistant coach at Southwest Minnesota State University, competing in Division II's Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC). The Mustangs had a combined record of 15-18-2 during 2019 and 2021; their 2020 season was canceled due to COVID.
Phillips holds several qualifications including United Soccer Coaches National Diploma, Advanced National Diploma, Goalkeeping Level 1&2 Diplomas, and CSCS Certification. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Mary in 2019 and obtained a master's degree in Physical Education from Southwest Minnesota State.
