Michigan's agricultural sector achieved a new export record in 2024, reaching $2.9 billion, as announced by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) Director Tim Boring. This milestone was shared on National Agriculture Trade Day and reflects an increase of over $282 million from the previous year.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer praised the state's farmers and workers, stating, "Michigan farmers, food, and forestry workers are the best in the world." She emphasized her commitment to supporting local communities with investments aimed at fostering agricultural diversity and economic growth.
Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist II highlighted Michigan's diverse agricultural landscape, saying, "From urban farms in Detroit to the cherry orchards Up North, there's something for everyone here in Michigan." He pointed out that the $2.9 billion in exports signifies economic momentum and rural prosperity.
MDARD Director Tim Boring commented on the success of Michigan's agriculture sector: "This record-breaking success for our agriculture, food and forestry companies proves Michigan ag brings high-quality products to the table that are in high demand domestically and internationally."
The state's agricultural diversity is supported by its access to water resources. Products such as processed foods led export values at $636 million. Other significant categories included sugar beet-related products at $393 million, dairy products at $303 million, starches like pasta and bread at $285 million, and wood products at $252 million.
Canada remained Michigan's largest export market with purchases totaling $1.25 billion. Other key markets included Mexico ($452 million), South Korea ($174 million), Japan ($154 million), and China ($150 million).
MDARD’s International Marketing Program aids businesses by creating domestic and international market opportunities through trade shows, missions, research initiatives, among others.
