Today, the Michigan Commission of Agriculture and Rural Development approved a $150,000 grant from the Food and Agriculture Investment Program (FAIP) to Cherry Republic, Inc. The funds are part of a $2.8 million expansion project aimed at enhancing the company's fulfillment and distribution center.

The project will add 16,000 square feet of dry and cold storage space to Cherry Republic's existing 20,000-square-foot facility. It also includes new loading docks, risk mitigation infrastructure via a solar power array, and modernized equipment. This expansion is expected to create 20 new jobs.

The additional storage will enable Cherry Republic to purchase and store more cherries during high-yield years. It will also allow the company to explore new product lines and revenue streams for cherry farmers. By consolidating storage and distribution into one facility, Cherry Republic aims to streamline its supply chain.

"This project will focus on increasing economic prosperity within the cherry industry," said MDARD Director Tim Boring. "Grant opportunities like the Food and Ag Investment Program support local communities."

Founded in 1989, Cherry Republic employs over 500 people across six retail locations in addition to its fulfillment center. The company uses Michigan's Montmorency Tart Cherries for over 200 products ranging from chocolate-covered cherries to cherry wine.

"We are so excited for this opportunity," said Roni Hazelton, Senior Vice President of Fulfillment for Cherry Republic. "This addition will not only support our current needs but also strengthen the foundation for future growth."

FAIP provides financial support for projects that expand food processing in Michigan. It plays a significant role in fostering growth in the agriculture industry while bolstering Michigan's economy.
