Small businesses in Michigan with 250 or fewer employees are now eligible to apply for matching grants from the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA). The grants, which can provide up to $5,000, are intended to help employers purchase equipment and training that will improve workplace safety and health.
The MIOSHA Workplace Improvement to Safety and Health (MIWISH) grant program offers a dollar-for-dollar match on qualifying purchases. Grants will be distributed until available funds run out, with preference given to employers in high-hazard industries as identified by MIOSHA’s Strategic Plan. Projects connected to State and National Emphasis Programs—such as those addressing amputations, cannabis industry hazards, heat-related illness, trenching, and excavation—will also receive priority.
To qualify for the grant, employers must have no more than 250 employees company-wide, operate under MIOSHA jurisdiction, conduct a site-specific evaluation justifying the equipment purchase, ensure the project is directly related to reducing injury or disease risk for employees, and demonstrate both knowledge of and commitment to completing the project.
Further details about eligibility requirements and how to apply can be found at the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity website at https://www.michigan.gov/leo/bureaus-agencies/miosha/about-miosha/miwish-safety-grant-program.
