NMU athletics recap: Golf finishes strong; lacrosse struggles; basketball triumphs

Northern Michigan University's athletic teams had a busy week, participating in various competitions from March 4 to March 9, 2025.

The men's and women's golf teams participated in the Saddlebrook Spring Kickoff. On March 4, the men's team was fourth with a score of +28, with Tyler Annala leading with +6. The women's team was sixth at +60, led by Maggie Pietila with a round of +6. By March 5, the men's team improved to third place at +62, while Walter Ylitalo moved up six spots to tie for eighth individually. The women's team maintained its position in sixth place, with Maddy Martens recording the best round for the Wildcats. On March 6, both teams completed their rounds, with the men finishing third and women sixth overall.

In lacrosse, NMU faced Quincy on March 5 and lost in overtime 13-14 after initially making a comeback. On March 7, they bounced back with an 18-6 victory over Missouri Western. Josie Lakosky set a program record with seven goals and three assists. However, on March 9, they suffered an 18-4 defeat against Maryville.

NMU's basketball teams were also active during this period. The women's team defeated SVSU 81-60 in the GLIAC Quarterfinals on March 5 but lost to FSU in the semifinals on March 8. Sydney Whitehouse scored a game-high of 18 points in that match. Meanwhile, the men's basketball team won against GVSU on March 5 and secured a close win over Michigan Tech in the semifinals on March 8 before clinching the GLIAC Championship against LSSU on March 9 without Dylan Kuehl due to injury.

In Nordic skiing at the NCAA Championships from March 6 to March 8, NMU's athletes competed in various events but did not secure top positions.

Women's wrestling saw Yu Sakamoto finish third at the NCWWC National Championships on March 8, earning All-America honors alongside Alissa Caltagirone who finished eighth.

Overall, it was an eventful week for NMU athletics across multiple sports disciplines.
