As National Consumer Protection Week concludes, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel emphasizes the efforts of her office to safeguard Michigan residents. The Department of Attorney General actively mediates consumer complaints and advocates for enhanced protections.
Nessel stated, "My office has done a tremendous job equipping Michigan consumers with the tools to recognize scams, fight fraud, and demand corporate accountability." She highlighted actions taken against pharmaceutical companies related to the opioid epidemic and utility rate cases, emphasizing commitment to holding various entities accountable.
The Consumer Protection Team examines every complaint received via online forms or phone calls. Many complaints lead to successful mediation or further investigations. The Department issues alerts about new scams and launched a dedicated consumer protection website in November 2023. This site features over 140 consumer alerts.
Attorney General Nessel travels across Michigan presenting scam prevention tips at community centers and senior facilities. She also advocates for stronger protections under the Consumer Protection Act, citing complications due to current limitations.
In January 2022, Nessel initiated an investigation into Eli Lilly regarding insulin pricing and requested that the Michigan Supreme Court reconsider rulings affecting action against drug manufacturers under the Michigan Consumer Protection Act.
On a national scale, Nessel joined other attorneys general in defending the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) through amicus briefs following directives from the Trump administration halting certain investigations. Highlighting CFPB's impact, she released a video addressing threats facing the Bureau.
Since taking office in 2019, Nessel has prioritized tackling the opioid crisis resulting in settlements exceeding $1.6 billion for Michigan governments from companies like McKinsey & Co., CVS, Walmart, and Walgreens. Funds are allocated for opioid-use disorder treatment and remediation. A webpage was launched in March 2024 to ensure transparency in settlement distributions.
Nessel is also an advocate for utility customers scrutinizing every utility rate case before the Michigan Public Service Commission securing over $3.7 billion in savings since 2019.
In combatting fraud, Nessel collaborated on forming a multistate Anti-Robocall Litigation Task Force targeting illegal robocalls and participated in efforts against unwanted automated calls. Additionally, she launched identity theft support systems for residents and businesses.
