Ryan Guimont, principal of Charlotte Middle School in Eaton County, has been awarded the Excellence in Education award by the Michigan Lottery. This accolade recognizes his efforts in fostering a positive environment for students, staff, and families within his school and community.
The Excellence in Education awards were initiated by the Michigan Lottery in 2014 to honor exceptional public-school educators across Michigan. Weekly award recipients receive $2,000, and one will be chosen as Educator of the Year at the end of the school year to receive an additional $10,000. Winners are also featured on various media partner stations including WXYZ-TV Detroit and FOX 17 Grand Rapids.
Lottery Commissioner Suzanna Shkreli praised Guimont's dedication: “Mr. Guimont’s investment in his community and drive to build relationships with students and staff is a true asset to the Charlotte Community Schools.” She added that his care for students and colleagues makes him an exemplary educator.
Guimont was inspired to enter education by his sister with special needs. He said, “As a child, I grew up with a sister with special needs... These experiences sparked a love of working with children and helping them learn to become the best versions of themselves.”
A colleague nominated Guimont for this recognition due to his significant impact as both a Special Education teacher and principal. The nominator highlighted his commitment to building relationships with students through daily interactions and support at various events.
Guimont holds degrees from Michigan State University and Notre Dame of Maryland University. He has spent 16 years in education, four of which have been as principal at Charlotte Middle School.
Nominees for this award are evaluated based on their excellence, dedication, inspiration, leadership, and effectiveness within their educational roles.
