Northern Michigan University (NMU) athletics teams had a busy weekend with notable performances across various sports.
On Thursday, February 27, the NMU women's basketball team secured a narrow 69-68 victory against Parkside. This win ensured their position as the no. 2 seed for the upcoming GLIAC Tournament. The team outscored Parkside by five points in the final quarter, marking the largest lead of the game for either side. Abi Fraaza and Mackenzie Holzwart were standout players, achieving season-high scores of 20 and 18 points respectively.
The men's basketball team also triumphed over Parkside with an 83-70 win on the same day. They established a strong lead with a dominant first half, finishing with their best shooting performance of the season at 56%. Jackson Dudek and Dylan Kuehl each contributed significantly to this success with 17 points apiece.
However, Friday's hockey match against Ferris State ended in disappointment for NMU as they suffered a 5-1 loss despite leading in shots on goal going into the third period. Billy Renfrew scored his first collegiate goal while Trevor Mitchell recorded his first collegiate point during this game.
Saturday saw more success for NMU teams. The women's basketball team continued their winning streak with an 81-66 victory over Purdue Northwest. Kayla Tierney set a new program record by playing her 134th career game, surpassing Makaylee Kuhn's previous record of 133 games. Jacy Weisbrod was another key player, scoring seven triples and totaling 23 points.
The men's basketball team edged out Purdue Northwest in a close contest, securing a one-point win at 76-75 after trailing for much of the game. This victory earned them the fourth seed in the GLIAC tournament where they will face GVSU next Wednesday.
In track and field events at the GLIAC Indoor Championships on Saturday, NMU was placed second after day one with Ellyse Wolfrath setting a school record in the 60m hurdles.
The hockey team managed to recover from Friday's defeat by tying Ferris State at four goals each before winning in a shootout on Saturday night. Aidyn Hutchinson scored late to give NMU an initial lead before dramatic events unfolded within the last minute resulting in Danny Ciccarello scoring both tying and winning goals during regulation time and shootout respectively.
Finally on Sunday March 2nd at GLIAC Indoor Championships' conclusion; NMU finished fourth overall among competing schools amassing total score points tallying up-to seventy behind leaders such as GVSU who topped charts followed closely by WSU & SVSU respectively . Noteworthy achievements included podium finishes from athletes like Ellyse Wolfrath claiming gold medal honors within sixty meter hurdle category alongside Crystal Walker earning bronze whilst Alayna Vandegriff marked personal milestone reaching her inaugural placement atop triple jump segment podium too!
