The Northern Michigan University women's basketball team secured a victory against Purdue Northwest Pride with a final score of 81-66 in their last regular season game. This win extends their winning streak to three games as they prepare for the upcoming GLIAC Quarterfinals.
Northern Michigan holds an overall record of 21-7 and a conference record of 15-5, making them the No. 2 seed for the GLIAC Tournament. They are set to face No. 7 seed Saginaw Valley State on March 5 at Vandament Arena.
A significant milestone was achieved by Kayla Tierney during this game, marking her 134th career appearance and setting a new program record for most games played, surpassing Makaylee Kuhn's previous record of 133.
The Wildcats maintained control throughout the game, shooting efficiently from both the field and beyond the arc. Jacy Weisbrod led with seven successful three-pointers out of eleven attempts, contributing a total of 23 points. Alyssa Nimz added 12 points while Alyssa Hill and Sydney Whitehouse also scored in double figures with ten each.
Northern Michigan dominated in rebounds with a count of 45 compared to Purdue Northwest's 28 and led significantly in points in the paint, scoring 30 against PNW's twelve. Akyia Baker led Purdue Northwest with eighteen points, maintaining a perfect four-for-four from beyond the arc.
The Wildcats began strong with an early lead facilitated by Weisbrod's sharp shooting from three-point range. Although Purdue Northwest managed to tie the game at one point during the second quarter, NMU regained control and entered halftime leading by six points.
In the third quarter, Northern Michigan expanded their lead further with contributions from various players including Sarah Newcomer who added key three-pointers alongside Weisbrod and others. The Wildcats ended this quarter strongly with a commanding seventeen-point advantage.
As they move forward into tournament play, Northern will host Saginaw Valley State who previously defeated them earlier this season on January 18th in Marquette.
